June 29th 2013 was Armed Forces Day, a national day to celebrate and appreciate their role .There is so much material relating to the armed forces in the archives that we were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing what to take. We decided on a range of copies of photos from the late 19th century through to the 1950s. We also took a copy of the Book of Honour for the Manchester City Battalions of the 90th and 91st Infantry Brigades, published in 1916. This lists those who went to fight and their places of work.
Angela Rawcliffe, Learning Officer, set up craft activities for the children, and there was a steady stream of families colouring in, cutting out and making peg doll soldiers.
Some became masters of disguise!
There was plenty of interest in the photos from a wide range of veterans and visitors.
John Clarke came and told some of his fascinating wartime stories.
It wasn’t just the veterans who were fascinated by the photos and the Book of Honour.
We had included this photo, taken in Piccadilly in 1942, during Warship Week. It would have been amazing if someone had recognised this little lad. Do you?
