This week our lovely new website went live and I’m worried that some of you might have missed it. Many apologies to those of you who have already seen it, but our Big Friday Find this week is archivesplus.org
archivesplus.org lets you have a sneaky peek at some of the exciting Archives+ exhibition which includes documents, film and photographs telling Manchester’s histories from the cotton mill to the ship canal. The exhibition content has been drawn together from the collections held by the Archive+ partners and the range of material we’ve been looking at is huge. Trying to decide what to put onto the website was a really hard job, we wanted to give a fair representation of what the exhibition contains while keeping enough back to make you all want to come and see it in person!
Over the last couple of months Archives+ has stopped being a concept, some ideas and a project plan. archivesplus.org started out as a piece of flip chart paper in December 2012 and has gone through many incarnations until we arrived at the final site.
Developing archivesplus.org has been a team effort with lots of debate and discussion from everyone involved and my part was to make sure that everyone got what they wanted some of the time. Special thanks to David Govier (Manchester Libraries), Marion Hewitt and Will McTaggart (North West Film Archive), John Marsden (Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society) and Hannah Niblett (Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre and Education Trust) for being the core website team. There were lots of other people involved along the way – thanks to everyone who gave advice, guidance, support and biscuits.
The website will continue to grow over the next few months as we add more of the events that are being planned, more news items and more stories. Let us know what you think – we love to hear your opinions.
