Inspiring women feature in our latest blog.  Manchester Corinthians by Gary James is the history of a women’s football team formed in 1949 when the FA ban on women’s football was in place.  The team, a leading club in the 1950s and 60s, were based at Fog Lane Park in Didsbury, won many competitions and toured abroad regularly. Gary James is an authoritative football historian who has written a number of books on Manchester City, including a history of the women’s team.  The book contains interviews with team members.

M.A.L. the journalism and writing of Madeline Alberta Linford is by Michael Herbert. Madeline Linford joined the Manchester Guardian on Cross Street at 18 years old, around 1913, becoming the only woman on the senior editorial team in her 20s.  She also founded a women’s page in the paper and wrote novels such as the Manchester based Out of the Window (1930).

Another recent title added to library stock is The Northern Art Workers Guild and the Arts and Craft Movement in Manchester by Barry Clark and others, which fills a gap in this subject area.  There are also two new publications to start of the series named The History of Greater Manchester by Tram by Andrew Simpson and Peter Topping: one covering Cornbrook to Exchange Square, the other covering Trafford Bar to East Didsbury.

Finally there is new Manchester based fiction.  Crime is a popular subject and recent new titles include Sam Tobin’s Settle the Score and The Watch by Karen Woods.  A little different is The Library Thief by Kuchenga Shenje– a historical mystery based around a young woman from Jamaica who becomes involved in a mystery centred around a library and a secret diary.
